About This Attraction
Mangshan National Nature Reserve is one of China's most biodiverse protected areas — a vast, ancient subtropical forest straddling the border between Hunan and Guangdong provinces. Covering over 200,000 hectares, it is home to ecosystems that have remained largely undisturbed for thousands of years, and the sheer density of life here is extraordinary.
The reserve is perhaps best known internationally as the home of the Mangshan pit viper (Trimeresurus mangshanensis), a striking green snake with a white-tipped tail that was only discovered by science in 1990. Fewer than 500 individuals are thought to exist in the wild, making a sighting genuinely rare — but the knowledge that they're out there adds a certain frisson to every forest walk.
The Wuzhifeng scenic area within the reserve is the main visitor destination, featuring dramatic rock formations, ancient trees, and a cable car that lifts you above the forest canopy for panoramic views. Hiking trails range from gentle valley walks to challenging ridge routes, and the forest is at its most magical in early morning when mist fills the valleys and the light filters green through the canopy.
