About This Attraction
Perched at 1,300 metres above sea level in the Nanling Mountains, Yangtianhu Grassland is one of South China's most dramatic high-altitude plateaus. The name translates roughly to "Lake Gazing at the Sky" — a nod to the mirror-like crater lake that sits at the heart of the meadow, perfectly reflecting the clouds above.
Unlike the manicured parks of coastal China, Yangtianhu feels genuinely wild. Dozens of wind turbines rise from the plateau's edge, their blades turning slowly against the grey sky. In summer, the grassland turns a vivid emerald; in autumn, golden hues sweep across the hillsides. Even on overcast days — which are common at this altitude — the atmosphere is hauntingly beautiful.
The resort area has grown considerably in recent years, adding hobbit-style earth-mound cottages for overnight stays, a pet park with alpacas and deer, horse-riding trails, and a small amusement zone for families. Despite the additions, the core landscape remains unspoiled and worth every minute of the journey.
